Hip Hop bezeichnet nicht nur einen Musikstil, sondern eine ganze Kultur, deren Ursprung in den frühen 1970er Jahren auf den Straßen New Yorks zu finden ist. Die sich danach auf andere amerikanische Großstädte und ab den 1980 er Jahren auch Global ausbreitete.
Dieser Kult setzt sich hauptsächlich aus den vier Elementen Breakdance, Rap (Sprechgesang), DJing und Graffiti zusammen und hat mit der Zeit auch einen eigenen Modestil entwickelt. In der Hip Hop Szene wird sehr viel wert auf die eigene Persönlichkeit gelegt. Sie wird ausgedrückt durch die Musik, durch den Tanz und eben auch durch die Kleidung. Deswegen ist es schwierig von der Hip Hop Mode schlechthin zu sprechen. In erster Linie fällt Sie wohl durch extrem weite und sehr bequeme Kleidung auf.
Man findet in der Hip Hop Mode sehr viele Elemente aus dem Sportbereich, allem voran dem Basketballsport. Das ist wohl darauf zurückzuführen, das Basketball damals wie heute ein sehr verbreiteter Straßensport war und die Basketballstars die ersten waren, die es geschafft haben dem Getto zu entkommen. Aber auch findet man übergroße Jogginghosen oder ganze Sportanzüge.
Des Weiteren gibt es die Baggy Pants Klamotten. Das sind sehr weite und tief sitzende Hosen. Sie werden ohne Gürtel getragen in Anlehnung an die Gefängnisinsassen, denen bei Haftantritt als erstes die Gürtel abgenommen wurden.
Die T-Shirts und Sweater haben oft sehr auffällige Graffitimuster. Genauso die Hoodies, die Kapuzenpullis, die auch meist in Übergröße getragen werden.
Als Kopfbedeckung findet man in meistens Baseballcaps, die entweder gerade, schräg oder verkehrt herum getragen werden, aber auch Pudelmützen oder Bandanas. Das sind ca. 60×60 cm. große Tücher, die auf dem Kopf getragen und im Nacken zusammen gebunden werden. Ergänzt wird das Outfit oft mit Accessoires, wie extrem auffälligem Schmuck, der meistens mit sehr vielen Steinen besetzt ist, und deswegen auch Bling-Bling oder kurz Bling genannt wird.
Waren die Anhänger dieser Moderrichtung bis vor einigen Jahren fast ausschließlich unter der männlichen Bevölkerung zu finden, haben sich mittlerweile immer mehr Mädchen und junge Frauen dieser Stilrichtung zugewandt. Wobei die Damen meist auf die figurbetontere Variante zurückgreifen. Diese Mode unterliegt eben keinen Konventionen und ist scheinbar mehr als nur eine Modeerscheinung.
